Stretch Your Closet // how to make your summer style work in the fall

Today I’m sharing some of my tips and tricks for stretching your closet over multiple seasons.  Very rarely do I ever buy a piece of clothing without first checking to see if I can wear it at least three different ways, over several different seasons.  It’s the best way to save money, AND get the most out of your clothing!fall dressing

No 1 // Maxi Dresses (dress, boots, jacket, hat)

I love pairing my summer maxis with a leather jacket and boots. It’s a great contrast between the girly dress and the tough leather, and it’s a perfect transition outfit!

No 2 // Denim Cutoffs (shorts, boots, tee, cardi)

shorts are one of those tricky pieces that are so  necessary for the summer, but then get shoved to the back of the dresser the rest of the year. Add some layers like an oversized cardigan and some funky boots and stretch the shorts season on into the fall.

No 3// Skater Skirts (skirt, sweater, boots, tights)

layering summer skirts with sweaters and tights are a great way to add versatility to your closet. a great pair of boots will add that final fall-ish touch.

No 4 // Sundresses (dress, button down, socks, boots)

obviously I love a good tough girl vibe in an outfit. layer up your sundresses with plaid and a killer pair of boots and you’ll be able to stretch that wardrobe right on into winter. and don’t forget the socks! fall is a great time to add in new accessories like chunky socks.

Fall Fever

Fall is officially upon us and I am ecstatic. Oklahoma tends to have very un-Fallish falls, where we go from oven scale heat to just a morsel of true fall weather, straight into months of depressing cold. So far we’re hovering in between ovens and true fall and I’m crossing my fingers that we’ll get some actual fall days this year, with the leaves changing and that fireplace smell in the air and hello, the clothes, the most important part.

Here’s a list of my favorite Fall pieces this year! The 90′s are calling and I’m saying helloooo! fall fever

1. oversized coats // I feel very breakfast club-ish in this trend and that is not a bad thing.

2. chunky shoes // i just love a good chunky shoe, they make me taller and immediately add a little pizaaz to an outfit.

3. anything plaid // seriously, give me all the plaid. Jared has started his winter beard which basically makes me feel like i’m married to a bear hunter so i might as well accept it and wear plaid every day of my life. plus it’s a great pattern mixer!

4. oversized knits // fall is characterized by two things: food and wind. big chunky sweaters that let me eat the whole room and also stay cozy warm? count me in

5. highwaist black pants // i mean really, what else do you need? they go with everything. they’re super comfy. they stretch for miles. they never show stains. drops the mic

6. wool hats // i’m such a fan of hats, they hide bad hair days with such flair.

7. cute sweats // picture me at a bonfire, roasting some mellows, maybe going shopping or something, and then I go home and never change clothes… and these are on sale so…

8. hints of leather // i love bringing a little edge to an outfit, like a leather jacket or a leather bag. perfect.

There are many instances in fashion where the phrase “you look like a weirdo” can be the highest of compliments. When I walked out of the bedroom and asked Jared if the fact that my pants came up to my armpits and i was 6″3 with my chosen heels on (so the jeans wouldn’t drag the ground, duh) made me look disproportionate, and he responded with “you look like a walking head with legs” I knew I had nailed it!

the fact that Jared had to hold my hand as I walked across the parking lot so i wouldn’t fall is completely normal. for fashion.

this weekend was the most perfectly Fallish weather. Stormy and cloudy and moody; an excellent day to eat pancakes and nap the day away. unfortunately this weather and i have a bit of a love/hate relationship because the sudden swings in temperature make my allergies go nuts, so i spent the day napping with the worst sinus headache in all of creation.  but i just kept thinking “this is just so great, i love this weather!” the whole time. luckily i have a precious hubby who will rub my neck and make me pancakes and only roll his eyes once when im in the tub long enough for the water to go cold and only grumble a little when i get cookie crumbs on his side of the bed, even though he specifically said “do not eat cookies in the bed”. sorry babe…

and yes I’m aware that it’s Tuesday and yes i know i should have posted this on Monday, but give me a break who is ever really ready for Monday? not i. and if Monday was a struggle, well then Tuesday is a bit harried as well. by Wednesday we’ll be rolling pretty good around here. don’t judge.

IMG_0422 copyYesterday was my first day to work with the new do and I think it’s going to take my office longer to get used to the change then anyone else. I was asked twice if I was wearing a wig. Either people would avoid looking me in the eye, like I had had some horrible pigment-leaking accident and therefore they couldn’t look at me or else it could be contagious, or they were utterly fascinated and just didn’t know how to tear their eyes away. IMG_0426 copyIn other news, have you heard of pikos? They’re these super simple tops and dresses, usually solid colors and always oversized, and lately they’ve been popping up EVERYWHERE.  IMG_0446 copySo RiffRaff let me try one out to see what all the hullaballoo was about and I gotta say, they’re pretty dang comfortable. Super soft and perfect for Mexican food nights. So much food baby room.

They’re also a nice switch up from just regular v-neck tees, kind of makes it feel like you actually put some effort into getting dressed. And since I love any piece that will make it look like i put way more effort into an outfit then i really did, I believe I shall give Pikos an A++++.IMG_0427 copyIMG_0441 IMG_0428 copyIMG_0439 copy IMG_0448IMG_0429 copy Piko top c./o RiffRaff (all PIko options here)//Urban Outfitters jeans (distressed by mua) (on sale!)//Target gladiator heels (also on sale! you lucky duck)

working girl

IMG_0390 copy IMG_0366 IMG_0365Working with a corporate office dress code is a real struggle for me sometimes. Ours is definitely not the strictest of dress codes, but anyone would tell you that I don’t always follow the rules very well. I tend to want to push the boundaries a little bit, because my style is so much a part of my personal expression. Try to place a box on that expression, and I feel too fenced in.

But since I fully understand the reason behind such rules, I’ve been trying lately to find ways to be myself within the confines of a dress code. Funky skirts like this one definitely help make that possible. So does red lipstick.

How about some of my other working girls out there? What do you do to express yourself while also adhering to your work dress code?

that one time…

IMG_0165 hey remember that one time

i was surreptitiously trying to get in my yoga stretches while at work and I ripped the crotch right out of my pantsIMG_0193 - Version 2

along with the crotch ripping….

i went to target to get new pants and informed the dressing room lady that i would be buying the pants i had donned because i had experienced a wardrobe malfunction. she then proceeded to make me feel like the worst sort of criminal by walking me up to the cash register so i couldn’t make a run for it (even though i had told her what i was doing) while also informing me that i was going to get her in trouble for making her leave her dressing room station. rule abiders, i tell ya. so dramaticIMG_0185

i went to the bank drive thru and i dropped the deposit cylinder shoot thingey with an obnoxiously loud and echoey clatter, after which it proceeded to go rolling down the barely even existent hill and I had to go running after it before it caused a twelve car pileup in the street, all while the other drive thru-ers stared at me through their windows and pointed at the idiot running in high heels

i tried to do a u-ey in an unknown city and almost killed myself and an entire car of others.IMG_0187

i went to the bathroom in the airport and let the bathroom attendant usher me into a stall, only to be serenaded in spanish while i did my business. i didn’t have any cash on me so i when i just told the lady, “um thank you!” after gently prodding her in the back with the stall door so i could get out, i was then given the death stare until i finished washing my hands and left the bathroom. never to return ever again

fan.

IMG_0024

I’m a fan of overalls. I’m especially a fan of overalls snatched up from the little girls’ section of Target, for half the price of the Women’s overalls.

Snatched up during an improptu jaunt to the store during a lunch break, on the way to the grocery section to grab some lunch options that maybe don’t involve the words “deep fried”.

Eyed up as I slide past to take a peek at the comforter sets because I will, I will, win the “we don’t need a new coverlet” war.

Slipped into the cart as I waltz over to the makeup aisles because you can never have enough lip gloss, says the the girl with a whole drawer of lip gloss.

Half an hour, turkey, lipgloss, no new coverlet but the proud owner of overalls later, I am officially a fan. IMG_0033IMG_0036 IMG_0039 IMG_0034

twenty six.

IMG_9987

my birthday was earlier this month, good ole twenty six. it actually, truly, snuck up on me this year. i’ve never forgotten my birthday, nor let anyone forget that it was coming. i don’t know, it was probably due to getting married and this insane month at work, but this year i just blinked and suddenly i was 26.

IMG_9955

i feel like this year it’s wasnt about celebrating my age, it was a celebration of the year. like a 2nd New Year’s Eve, I grew nostalgic thinking about 25. What I survived. What I learned. What I was given. What i grew out of and what i became.

IMG_9969 IMG_9967 IMG_9961

I’m excited about 26. about what i will experience, what chances I will take. I feel like after 25, i want to grab life by the horns and just run with it. run as far and as long as i possibly can, squeeze every last beautiful drop of happiness and magic that i can from this year. life is so precious, so very precarious.

IMG_9997

I’ve been blessed with this one beautiful life. I just can’t help but wonder: what kind of fantastical adventures will happen in 26?

i’ll admit when i’m wrong..sometimes

let it be known that the Rambler is a humble gal and will admit when she has been wrong or unjustly critical.

I, Kaleigh Bishop (sounds good don’t it?) bought some birks.

IMG_9617 EDIT I know I know, I was so vehemently against them.  But Target, I tell ya, they just grab you and suddenly you’re trying things you never thought you would and buying crap you never really needed and next thing ya know, you’re wearing faux birkenstocks. IMG_9619 edit IMG_9620 edit IMG_9625 edit IMG_9629 edit i still feel like i have duck feet though. but they are pretty comfy. dang it.
